The rate of invention and innovation is set to skyrocket in the next few decades. During the 18th century, steam engines were developed by trial and error. Today, most inventions are produced by giant corporations. But there are also many people who lack scientific training and yet invent amazing devices.

Inventing is an expensive and challenging activity. To succeed, an inventor needs to find a way to make money from his or her idea. While the most common way to do this is to sell the product, other methods exist. Ultimately, the success of an invention depends on how much value it provides to its users.

The ability to create an original idea and turn it into something useful is what defines an inventor. Oftentimes, the best inventions are not the first, but rather the most creative and inventive.
